Sublimation Kinetics of Co2 Ice and Evolution of the Martian Polar Caps
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: The martian polar caps are in majority composed of CO2 ice [1-3]. Early modeling of the polar caps suggested that they were in equilibrium with the ~6 mbar CO2 atmosphere [2], and various observations have shown a ciclicity of growth and retreat, following martian seasons [4]. However, other studies show that CO2 ice constitutes only a thin veneer on the surface of a probably much thicker ice layer [5]. This veneer is too small for the caps to be in equilibrium with the atmosphere [6,7]. This would also suggest that the polar caps are very young [8]. Therefore, there must be a much larger unidentified CO2 reservoir in the martian subsurface, possibly adsorbed CO2 in the regolith [9,10], to buffer the much larger atmosphere, or it means the total budget of CO2 is present in the atmosphere, and that Mars has today much less CO2 than other telluric planets.

Introduction: The south martian polar cap is predominately composed of CO2 ice [1,2]. متن کاملRetreat of the North Seasonal Cap of Mars Observed by Omega and Crism
Introduction: Seasonal caps play an important role for surface-atmosphere interactions on Mars, as they trap up to 25% of the atmosphere during winter. While seasonal caps are mainly constituted of CO2 ice, H2O ice and dust play an important role in their evolution. Spectral imaging observations in the near infrared provide unambiguous information on the composition of the seasonal caps as CO2 ...

Introduction: For this investigation we have used neutron spectroscopy data gathered with HEND/GRS instrument onboard Mars Odyssey. Starting from 2002 this mission passed through primary and several extended phases accumulating enormous data volume. During this mission one has been proved that orbital mapping of neutron flux from martian surface (instruments HEND, NS and GRS) is powerful method...
متن کاملChallenges and solutions for the human exploration of the Martian poles
Introduction: The Martian poles present special challenges for human scientific expeditions that bear similarities to operations in terrestrial polar regions. These challenges include mobility on snows and ices, the problem of accommodation in the deep field, methods for the use of local resources and problems of station maintenance. Because the polar regions are dynamic, substantial volatile s...
متن کاملMartian South Polar Deformation and Sublimation Processes
Introduction: The first glacial deformations of an extraterrestrial ice sheet have been discovered and documented at the Martian south polar cap in Mars Orbital Camera (MOC) images [1-4]. Within the south polar cap various structural deformational features have been found, including boudinage, folds, and faults [1-2] (Fig. 1). These features are also found in terrestrial glaciers [5-7]. Mars pr...
